BUZZ HPC Powers Canada's Most Purposeful AI Hackathon: Building Safer AI for Youth Mental Health

March 12, 2026

BUZZ HPC, a leading Canadian vertically integrated sovereign AI cloud provider and NVIDIA Cloud Partner, is proud to serve as the official AI compute and infrastructure partner for the “Championing AI for Good: Building Safer AI for Youth Mental Health” Hackathon, taking place March 16-23, 2026 in Montreal.

The event is co-hosted by the Mila Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, one of the world’s most renowned academic AI research centers, and Bell AI Fabric, one of Canada’s largest telecommunications providers and a national leader in advancing responsible AI and digital well-being initiatives.

This week-long event will bring together researchers, developers, and social innovators united by a shared mission: to develop practical solutions that protect young people from the growing mental-health risks associated with the rapid adoption of AI technologies.

A Mission That Hits Close to Home

With 800 million weekly active users on platforms like ChatGPT alone, one in ten people on Earth now interacts with an AI chatbot weekly and the number one use of generative AI is for companionship or therapy.

Behind that statistic are real stories: teenagers forming emotional dependencies on AI companions, young people in crisis receiving responses that amplified their distress rather than redirected them to help. This hackathon was born from the urgency of those stories.

Mila's AI Safety Studio launched on World Mental Health Day 2025 is developing concrete safeguards to detect and block harmful content, including suicide assistance filters, and redirect vulnerable users to appropriate public health assistance channels. The hackathon channels that same energy into a week of collaborative building, where every line of code written by participants could one day stand between a young person and harm.

Proudly Canadian. Sovereignly Secure.

In an era of increasing concern over cross-border data flows and foreign cloud dependency, BUZZ HPC is delivering something rare: a fully sovereign Canadian AI infrastructure stack purpose-built for this event.

Every GPU notebook, every API call, every token generated during the hackathon will be processed and stored entirely within Canada. BUZZ HPC is providing participants with:

For a hackathon tackling sensitive youth mental health data and AI safety guardrails, Canadian data sovereignty isn't a checkbox – it's a core ethical requirement. BUZZ HPC ensures that every participant, researcher, and dataset is protected under Canadian jurisdiction from day one to final submission.

The NVIDIA-Powered Inference Stack Behind the Scenes

BUZZ HPC is not just providing cloud space, it is deploying a production-grade NVIDIA inference reference architecture to give hackathon participants access to the same class of tooling used in world-class AI deployments.

At the heart of the stack: Sovereign access to NVIDIA Nemotron model endpoints, purpose-built for safe, steerable AI interactions making them ideal for youth mental health applications where model alignment and response safety are paramount.

The full NVIDIA-aligned inference stack powering the hackathon includes:

This stack is fully aligned with NVIDIA's inference reference architecture, giving participants a professional-grade foundation to build, test, and deploy their AI safety solutions without infrastructure friction getting in the way of their ideas.

Quotes

"The best AI infrastructure is infrastructure that disappears, leaving developers free to focus entirely on what they're building. At BUZZ HPC, we're proud to put that principle to work in service of something that genuinely matters: protecting young people. Having all of this run on Canadian soil, with Canadian data residency, powered by NVIDIA's most advanced inference technologies, is exactly the kind of sovereign AI capability Canada needs to lead on the world stage."Craig Tavares, President and COO, BUZZ HPC
